Teaching Reading Strategies

What distinguishes good readers from bad readers is the extent to which they master some specific reading strategies. In this article, there is a clear description of what students should be able to do to become good readers.

The writer explains how students should:

  • activate their knowledge (schemata),
  • ask questions before reading
  • use words to see (visualize)  meaning
  • determine important information
  • summarize and synthesise
